An Introduction to the Book on Islamic LawsIn this article, we shall discuss a book that has been studied extensively by the scholars of Islam and jurisprudence. This book is called “al-majmu’ah al-kubraa” which translates to “The Comprehensive Collection.” It has also been titled “tehzeeb ul ahkaam.” This is because it analyzes and discusses all of the actions that are legislated in Islam, such as ritual worship, dealings between humans, dealings with animals and so forth. There are a number of benefits to studying the book “tehzeeb ul ahkaam.” First, it will deepen a person’s understanding of the religion of Islam and their relationship with Allah. Second, it will prevent them from committing sins and forbidden actions that they thought were permissible. Third, it will help them refrain from forbidden actions that they thought were impermissible (i.e., making them more careful in this regard). Fourth, studying this book will earn many rewards from Allah, even if one does not adhere to what is mentioned in it. Allah says, “...then do not let yourselves go astray,- neither those who have gone astray before nor those who are going astray now. This indeed is the admonition of Allah - True indeed is what they say.” (Surah al-Nahl, 16:27) Nevertheless, once one accepts the truth of this book, then one should adhere to all of its rulings. We will discuss the book in 4 sections: The book of "tehzeeb ul ahkaam" is divided into 20 sections. Each section is divided into chapters that correspond to the subject matter in that section (i.e., one chapter for prayer and fasting, etc.). The last chapter in the book is about “the witnesses” and “the juries” to determine whether an action was legislated or not. It discusses how the testimony of witnesses is taken and the various means of establishing evidence in order to prove whether an action was legislated. It also mentions how one can rely on the statements of trustworthy scholars without needing to establish evidence for them. After explicating all of these matters, al-Shatibi ends his book with a chapter about the merits and benefits of this book. He writes:“And may Allah bless our master Muhammad, His family and His companions, the imams who walked in their footsteps, and all those who follow them with righteousness until the Day of Judgement from among those who accompany them here from us and from whom Allah guides to that which they call to.
